Carya ovata, commonly called shagbark hickory, is a large deciduous tree that typically grows 70-90’ (infrequently to 120’) tall with an irregular, oval-rounded crown. It is native from Quebec to Minnesota south to Georgia and Texas. Shagbark hickory is a very shaggy-looking tree. Its dark charcoal bark is shingled with warped shreds not unlike the scabers of a mushroom stalk or coarse shavings from a very large chocolate bar. The shagbark hickory’s bark is lighter grey and smooth when the tree is young; the shagginess develops as the tree increases in girth. Shagbark Hickory is monoecious, producing separate male (staminate) and female (pistillate) flowers on the same tree.
